What Makes a Great TTRPG in 2026?

We live in a blessed time for tabletop RPGs.
There are more great systems than ever before. Daggerheart is popping off, Paizo's Pathfinder seems to be in a solid place, and Shadowdark RPG has refreshed pulp fantasy.
Even massive fantasy worlds are entering the tabletop roleplaying game space. The Cosmere RPG recently shattered Kickstarter records and launched to enormous excitement from fans.
With so many tabletop RPGs competing for attention, many warriors and would-be heroes argue endlessly about which system is best. You have Nimble-tons who love simple, streamlined tactics and modern tabletop RPG design. On the other end of the spectrum you have players who still cling proudly to Pathfinder 1st Edition and its deep 3.5 roots.
But what actually makes a tabletop RPG great? What keeps millions of players returning to roleplaying games every week to tell new stories with their friends? That’s the question we hope to land on in this post—and hopefully with our new game, Ascension Quest.
Mechanics Matter… But They Aren’t Everything

Design matters. The world you place players in matters.
Math—whether we like it or not—ends up mattering in many tabletop roleplaying games.
Probability curves, mechanical balance, and pacing all shape how a game feels at the table.
At Rocket Sword Games we’ve spent thousands of hours between all the founders honing these elements while building Ascension Quest. We've had long arduous discussions about the benefits of our 2d6 system, and ultimately changed it to a 1d12 system. We've argued 1d6's being added to damage vs. a flat +3.
We’ve built systems, designed mechanics, and crafted the world of Kiinspion with care.
But after all that time designing, one realization kept surfacing.
The Real Secret of Every Great Tabletop RPG

What actually matters most at any tabletop RPG table is the people.
The Game Master must exist for the story to be told and for the table to play. And if the GM doesn’t have friends to collaborate and tell a story with, then it’s no different than my toddler playing with his toys. It’s just more expensive toys. And potentially a lot more depressing.
Tabletop RPGs work because they create a shared storytelling experience between real people. Every campaign becomes something unique that could never happen the same way twice. The rules matters and the world matters. But the magic happens because a group of people gather together to tell a story.
Building a Living World

Because of that belief, we’ve leaned heavily into systems and worldbuilding that we hope enhance storytelling rather than replace it. One of the things we are most excited about with Ascension Quest is the Living World we are building around the game.
Our goal is not just to release a tabletop RPG system. We want to build a living narrative that grows through the stories players tell. Our living world has already begun connecting new groups to each other, new gods to their followers, and launching new Game Masters into the world. Through our Chronicles, Discord community, and World Anvil lore archives, Game Masters can connect with other GMs, ask questions, and even collaborate on expanding stories happening in the same regions.
If a GM likes a story unfolding somewhere in the world, they can connect with that GM and help expand the narrative. Instead of isolated campaigns, stories can grow together and that is what Ascension Quest is all about.
A Story Told by Thousands of Tables
Our hope is that the narratives in Ascension Quest will eventually be unlike anything else in tabletop RPGs. Not because we wrote them. But because thousands of players will be telling those stories simultaneously alongside one another.
It’s an ambitious vision.
Someday we hope Ascension Quest grows large enough to stand beside giants like Baldur’s Gate 3. But we also respect the journey ahead and understand that every great roleplaying game stands on the shoulders of the ones that came before it. If the idea of thousands of tables telling one evolving story excites you, Ascension Quest might be the tabletop RPG you’ve been waiting for.

Getting Started With Ascension Quest
How do I plug into the Living World?
The best way to plug into the Ascension Quest Living World is by joining our Discord community. This is where Game Masters coordinate campaigns, players share their chronicles, and new groups connect with one another across the world.
Join the community here → Ascension Quest Discord
From there you’ll find channels for campaign logging, lore discussions, GM support, and updates about the evolving world of Kiinspion. Each city and God has their own channels so it can be a bit overwhelming. Just make your way to the GM Registration chat and introduce yourself and your players, or you can introduce your new hero in the hero is born chat!
Where can I follow the development of Ascension Quest?
We regularly share development updates, worldbuilding videos, and system deep dives as Ascension Quest continues to grow.
You can follow along through:
Rocketsword Games website → rocketswordgames.com
Development updates and lore discussions → Discord
Articles and devlogs → rocketswordgames.com/blog
We believe building a tabletop RPG should be something the community experiences alongside us.
Where can I explore the world and lore of Kiinspion?
The world of Kiinspion continues to grow through both official lore and player-driven stories.
You can explore the world through World Anvil eventually, but for now most of the living world activity is engaged with on our discord. Or through our monthly newsletter which you can subscribe to here by going to the Home page, and filling out the form at the bottom of the page.
Our goal is for the world to evolve through the actions of players across thousands of tables.
